Projects
Selected work
A community, a letter, a podcast, an award and one commission. None of them started as a plan and none of them are finished.
None of these started as a project. Each one is a thing I did twice and then could not stop doing.
How I decide what to take on
The test is whether I would still be interested in month four, because month four is where the actual work is. If the answer depends on anyone noticing, it is not a project, it is an announcement. I say yes to about one thing a year. Everything below took longer than I told people it would.
Commission
The Stoneyard
A year in the stoneyard at Wells, photographed for the cathedral’s own archive.
Community
Field Notes
The fortnightly letter, written since 2019. Four thousand eight hundred readers, no sponsors, no growth plan.
Audio
Making It Slowly
Conversations with people who work in decades, recorded in their workshops rather than a studio.
Programme
The Bench Award
A £2,000 bursary for one apprentice in an endangered craft, funded entirely by the letter.
Community
The Long Table
A monthly slow-reading table in a Bristol library, now in its seventh year. Nobody has finished the book.
Books
The Slow Craft Fieldbook
A free fieldbook for people who teach a craft slowly. First printed in 2019, revised in 2026.
